Across the Bay is an extension of my Sea and Sky series, with a changed perception – I have adopted a high vantage point – the sea dominates most of composition culminating in a colourful sky/horizon.
The Sea and Sky series continues my practice of simplifying the landscape, working within a simple geometric format to explore the nuances of colour. I am seeking to find a balance between figuration and abstraction, tension and relaxation, light and darkness.
The work is about the sea and the sky, it is essentially non-representational. The ambiguity of subject matter hopefully allows the viewer to experience the image at a deep intuitive level.
Monotype is my preferred medium. It encourages me to take risks, resulting in intense, often unexpected effects, unlike any other medium.
A monotype is a unique one-off print. The image is created by applying ink or oil paint onto a metal or acrylic plate. The image is then transferred via a press to paper. Ink can be layered on the image, colour over colour, and printed in successive passes through the press. There are no permanent marks on the plate, consequently a monotype is a unique print.
