This month we are featuring the incredibly talented Jo Lane.
You'll get to know what makes her tick, take a look at some of her exhibition photos and some fresh new artwork.

A tireless worked, Jo has capped of completing her masters in drawing in London last year and a residency in Portugal with work in a number of group shows and a major exibition 'Bed' at Melbourne's West End Gallery. On the right is an image of Jo at the exhibition - and yes, true to the theme of the show she is wearing a dressing gown!
Below is an image of one of the drawings from this exhibition while it was still on the easel.

In January of this year, Jo had work selected for inclusion in the British publication "Women Art Book"

For the book, Jo had to choose a quote that resonated with her and create a work. Jo chose a quote by Helen Keller and the work created 'secret women's business' is now in a private collection. The quote?

“Thus it is that my friends have made the story of my life. In a thousand ways they have turned my limitations into beautiful privileges, and enabled me to walk serene and happy in the shadow cast by my deprivation.”

Jo Lane sharing a bit about herself.
How do I describe my Art? I say I am a ‘drawer’, and I quickly follow up that even if I paint I consider I am drawing in paint.... then they get it.

Nothing, in particular, drew me to be an artist – I just am one. I think in visual terms, and I am not happy/whole/relevant unless I am creating a work. My art is entirely an internal affair. I go to a place where puzzles, sense and feeling reign.

I am passionate about drawing, as a medium. It is elemental, primal, honest, immediate and so expressive. It is the first mark from the imagined world into the real world, and I find such incredible energy in that.

I love how it is so many things; a walked line in a paddock of misty grass is a drawing, a trace of the moon's trajectory is a drawing, a portrait in pencil is a drawing, a child’s rendering of the unspeakable is a drawing, I even think of a single note of music as a drawing.

When I am not in the studio I LOVE going to see other art and theatre. Other than that: long walks, keeping fit and chores.

Jo Lane is a drawer first and foremost. Whatever material Jo chooses to use - whether printing blocks, plates and ink or pencil - the expression of drawing is at the core.

Last year Jo undertook a residency at
a pencil and graphite factory in Portugal, São João da Madeira  and threw herself into the materials tp produce some compelling new work.

The freehand flowing lines carved into the relief signify the moment of any fluid movement in suspension. Each over printed with the other, creates two slightly different works butting up against each other, like twins in unison.
